When Denzel Washington rode into town last fall, stopping on the city's South Side looking for a barbecue joint he remembered as a kid, Leon's, he was disappointed learn it had closed. The moment, Washington randomly showing up at a south side, greeted by an 86 year-old great-grandmother who informed him Leon's was closed, was captured on video and went viral. A disappointed Washington went back to hollywood with his memories and the lucky lady who met her "favorite" movie star had a life-long story to tell. But that's not the end of the story— Leon's reopened in a new location at 1523 E. 63rd Street, with a soft launch last November, featuring favorites its known for including: hickory-smoked ribs, sausage links, fried catfish and its crispy french fries. Leon's owner Dr. Finney, says his late father’s barbecue sauce was a game-changer and attributes the restaurant's success to the family recipe. The eatery is having an invitation-only grand opening March 8.
