Today is the last day to register for Foodlab Chicago 3.0 workshops

Today is the last day to apply for FoodLab Chicago 3.0, an educational program designed for chefs, restaurateurs, and culinary makers who are looking to take their businesses to the next level.

FoodLab Chicago holds weekly 90 minute workshop sessions designed o enhance restaurant profitability, gain a better understanding of food costs, grow the workforce, and cultivate a dining culture which strengthens Southside communities.

This program consists of three sessions conducted in the autumn, winter, and spring of 2021 and 2022 and is provided at no charge to participants.

The next session starts October 4, 2021 and runs through November 15, 2021. Participants who successfully complete one season of programming will receive a small stipend and be invited to attend the next session’s season. Participants will be selected based on their completed applications as assessed by the FoodLab Chicago 3.0 leadership team. Apply here.

Kitchen + Kocktails' grand opening is Friday

The highly touted Kitchen + Kocktails', 444 N. Wabash Ave., a new black-owned restaurant from Kevin Kelley, a lawyer by trade, grand opening is October 1. 

Kelley's curated southern-inspired menu with a twist features items such as fried chicken and lobster tails; shrimp and grits; jerk lamb chops.

The cocktail menu offers a creative array of specialty drinks that includes; strawberry jalapÄ“no Margarita; Candy Cloud and Black Magic.  

The restaurant's decor includes a peppering of black and white photos of iconic Chicagoans such as President Obama; Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan and Walter Payton.

The Chocolate Sanctuary Restaurant Lounge's, 5101 Washington St., Gurnee, 6 p.m. September dinner, "Oh Canada Chef's Dinner" will be available September 29-30; $45. 

The menu includes: butter tart; split pea soup with cocoa lardon paired with a Canadian apple tini; poutine (French fries; fresh cheese curds and house-made beef gravy) paired with blackberry brandy Canadian whiskey sour; lobster roll with maple coleslaw and house made ketchup chips paired with tangerine ginger candy old fashion with Canadian whiskey.

Solazo opens today

El Solazo, 5600 Pulaski After closing two years ago due to a fire, reopens today as the re-envisioned Solazo

Owner Pepe Barajas' new concept has a more upscale-casual feel similar to its sister restaurant La Josie. A former BYOB eatery upgrades include a agave bar program focusing on from agaves from all regions of Mexico including rare selections from Jalisco

New food items include: puestos de tacos (taco stands); ceviche, Aguachile Rojo ($12), with choice of Baja California striped bass or tiger shrimp, chile piquin, onion, tomato, cucumber, avocado and cilantro and tacos (with housemade tortillas). Online orders available here.

McDonald's "Loyal Fan" video contest

McDonalds operators of Chicago and Northwest Indiana are hosting the My McDonald's Rewards Chicagoland Contest.

To enter customers must create a fun 30-second video demonstrating why they are the most loyal fan in the designated area.

Partcipans can upload their video to their personal Instagram account with tag @mcdchicagoland using hashtags,   #McDChi or #Contest.

The deadline to enter is September 30. Winner will be announced mid October. First place winner receives a $5,000 Arch Card; one-of-a-kind Big Mac trophy; party for 10 ( winner and nine guests) at McDonald's headquarters.

Four runners up will receive $500 Arch Cards and McDonald's merchandise.

The 30th Annual Long Grove Apple Fest returns September 24-26 in downtown Long Grove, 308 Old McHenry Rd, Long Grove. The highly anticipated event brings something for all to the table.

Vegetarian dishes are prepared chefs Stegner and George Bumbaris featuring vegetables from local sustainable farms that include: River Valley Ranch, Soil & Soul, Three Sisters Garden, Adam’s Acres, Genesis Growers and Capriole Farm. 

The cost is $25 per meal. A cheese supplement also is available for an additional cost. Prices do not include service fee or tax.

Roscoe Village Burger Fest gets underway today

The 14th Annual Roscoe Village Burger Fest, featuring a heated competition between six restaurant in a battle for best burger, kicks off September 3 at Belmont and Damen.

Participants in the Samuel Adams sponsored event are: Fatso's last Stand; Houndstooth Saloon; Byron's Hot Dogs; Reggies Chicago; Select Cut Steakhouse and Tandoor Char House.

Guest judges are: Christine Zwolinski (Chicago based lifestyle blogger) Samantha Esposito (Chicago Burger Bible blog): Whitney Reynolds (Whitney Reynolds Show) and Brian Phillips (WKQX)

An afternoon of fun includes: entertainment on two stages the Oakley Stage and Damen Stage.
