Instituto Cervantes' virtual Valentine's Day Spanish wine and cheese event

Virtual Dining Chicago hosts a Valentine's Day fundraising event for Instituto Cervantes featuring hand-picked wines by Robert Houde, president of the Spanish wine company and former head sommelier at Charlie Trotter's, 6:30 p.m. February 10 via Zoom.

Houde's selections include small batch varietals: Castell d'Age"Anne Marie" Cava Brut Nature Reserva NV, Penedes and Bodegas Bhilar Phincas Hapa Tinto, 2017. Along with the history of sparkling wines in Spain and Spanish sparkling wines and tips on how to pick out a good Cava.

The Fifty/50 is hosting a Super Bowl viewing party

The Fifty/50, 2047 W. Division St., is hosting a ticketed Super Bowl viewing party begins 4 p.m. February 7. A limit of 50 tickets available for the viewing party. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

During the party guest can safely view the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers spread out over the three floors with social distancing guidelines and COVID-19 in accordance with the City and State guidelines in place.

Pre-order packages are available for those desiring to view the came at home. 

In addition the venue's heated outdoor patio will be available for guests Super Bowl Sunday, seating will be on a first-come, first-serve basis during the Super Bowl.

Chef Grace Goudie hosts a virtual Valentine's Day cooking class, Feb 13

Executive Chef Grace Goudie of Scratchboard Kitchen, 5 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights, comes into your home for a virtual Valentine's Day couples cooking class, 7 p.m. February 13; $110, which includes a complete cooking kit for a five-course surf and turf dinner. 

Goudie's menu is: NY Striploin with caramelized shallot butter: seared scallops with blood orange, fennel and pistachio; caramelized broccolini with chimichurri and black truffle risotto. Dessert, equally decadent is a Black Forest pavlova (chocolate meringue) with cherry curd and whipped cream.

During the event Chef Goudie demonstrates how to season, sear and cook the steak; how to make a caramelized shallot compound butter, how to sear scallops, how to segment blood oranges and make a blood orange sauce, how to blanch and caramelize broccolini, how to make chimichurri, how to make risotto and how to plate her decadent dessert.

Cocktail pairing drinks, for an additional cost $25, include: Beeting Heart” old fashioned with whiskey, honey, orange, rosemary, beet juice, and orange bitters, and the “Beeting Heart" martini with apple vodka, lemon, lime, beet juice and cointreau. Created by pastry chef/partner Chris Teixira's Valentine's Day sweets are available in three varieties: Love (raspberry cake and freeze-dried strawberries with raspberry jam and vanilla frosting with a dark chocolate shell, rolled in dark chocolate Pop Rocks and freeze-dried raspberries; Lust (strawberry cake and freeze-dried strawberries mixed Champagne and pink frosting with a milk chocolate shell, rolled in in pink peppercorns) and Infatuation (devil's food cake and chocolate frosting mixed with Abuelita chocolate and marshmallows with a dark chocolate shell sprinkled with cayenne peer and red chocolate drizzle.

Long Grove Cocoa Crawl moves along with new additions

The Historic Downtown Long Grove Cocoa Crawl has implemented changes to its 2021 event, modifying the 4th annual outing with a modified tweak of two-day event taking place noon to 4 p.m. February 6-7.  

Participants include: Bella Donna; Broken Earth Winery; Buffalo Creek Brewing; Covered Bridge Creamery; Country House of Long Grove; Joanie's Pizzeria; Long Grove Confectionery; Ma and Pa's Candy; Morkes Chocolates of Long Grove; Olive Tap; Olivia's Boutique; Signature Popcorn; Viking Treasure and Within Reach. 

In addition a cocoa-driven scavenger app (necessary to attend) has been added to taper the interaction of participants. Groups of no more than six participants allowed. All visitors must wear masks. Register for the event and view more rules and regulations here.

Caroline Kolaja takes over as the executive pastry chef of the George Trois Group.

Kolaja's background includes renowned restaurant Tickets (owned by Albert Adria) in Barcelona, working for major hotels and stints as pastry chef for rock stars that include: Fleetwood Mac, Shakira and Def Leppard.  

Kolaja will be on with the group's George Trois, Silencieux and Aboyer restaurants when they reopen.

Uvae's January Wine tastings

Uvae Kitchen and Wine Bar, , January virtual wine tasting schedule is Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. through January 30.

The tasting is $30 per person (unless otherwise noted) and features 4 four-ounce pours, interactive Zoom tasting led by Uvae Sommeliers and guest wine makers along with a PowerPoint presentation and tasting sheet.

Pablo's Tiki Snack Shack now open in South Loop

Pablo's Tiki Snack Shop, 2537 S. Wabash, is now open for take-out and delivery in the South Loop. 

The eatery, which is strictly a—to go establishment, features Tiki burgers, Cuban sliders, coconut shrimp and chili-glazed wings are typical menu items. The establishment, a venture  of Pablo Suez, debuted as a floating kitchen in Chicago in 2017. Bringing the concept back as a grounded establishment Pablo hopes the its summer island theme can woo Chicagoans out of the winter woes.
