Commonwealth Tavern, 2000 W. Roscoe, kicks off Labor Day weekend with a viewing of the Notre Dame football season opener vs. the Temple University Owls, 2:30 p.m. September 2. Specials will include $5 20-ounce Miller Lite stadium cups, $5 Guinness, $10 Fighting Irish nachos and $5 Jameson shots.


A family-friendly brunch all be available all weekend long including from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Labor Day. In addition to a $3 Build-Your-Own Mimosa Bar and $6 Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary Bar, guests will enjoy items like the Breakfast Burger (70% brisket, 30% bacon patty, tavern sauce, bread + butter pickles, fried egg on a brioche bun; $14), Buffalo or BBQ Wings ($10), Brunch Schnitzel (fried pork tenderloin, fried egg, smoked potatoes, pickled red onion, herb aioli; $14) and more.

The Albert also serves up a special cocktail, Hair of the Dog (Reposado tequila, bourbon, lime, ginger beet, and bitters; $12), for the occasion with fifty percent of the proceeds benefitting the Anti-Cruelty Society.

SideDoor, 100 E. Ontario, launches a new lunch and dinner menu from new Executive Chef Ryan Wombacher that include fresh seafood.

Others items among the new offerings include snack portions such as summer avocado mash (corn, charred tomatoes, jalapeños, and polenta toast); warm cheddar biscuits (maple-bacon-bourbon butter and red pepper jelly) and housemade Angus Beef jerky in sweet teriyaki, mild chipotle barbecue, and hot piri piri.

New small plates include: PEI mussels in a Miller High Life broth with bacon and tomatoes; lamb meatballs with tzatziki, piquillo-tomato sauce and favas; grilled peaches with Marcona almonds, Mache, and sherry vinaigrette along with daily selections of oysters and tartare.

Large plates include a house cured and smoked pastrami sandwich with Scottish rarebit and Chicago-style giardiniera; crispy seared scallops with nduja sausage, potatoes, sweet corn and salsa verde; Southern-style fried chicken wings (pictured); slaw; baby lamb chops with summer fruit, mint gremolata and candied pistachios and a seafood platter.

The Chicken Showdown #ChiChickenShowdown, showcase chicken dishes from fourteen food trucks and one mobile boutique, begins 11 a.m. August 17, Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington.

Participants, vying for bragging rights for best chicken dish, will be judged by celebrity guests that includes WVON's Art "Chat Daddy" Sims. In addition to food sampling festivities include a DJ who is certain to throw a few chicken themed songs into the mix. 

Also, Animal Care and Control will be bringing dogs dressed as chickens to kick off their “Clear The Shelter” event Saturday August 18.
