Macello offers Guns N' Roses inspired specials

Macello, 1235 W. Lake, has a special offer for concert-goers headed to the Guns N' Roses show November 6 at the United Center, 1901 W. Madison. Guests will be feted to the restaurant's GNR song-inspired (from the band's 1987 album "Appetite for Destruction") specials "It's So Easy," pizza and Peroni pairing; $15. Pizza selections include Margherita; Macello; Pugliese; Americana; Barese; Bianca; Molese; and Vegetariana.

Koi Evanston hosts cocktail class

Koi Fine Asian Cuisine, 624 Davis, Evanston, hosts a cocktail making class 6:30-9:30 p.m. November 9. Guests will learn how to prepare six cocktails: Whiskey Berry (house whiskey, raspberry puree, Chambord, fresh mint leaves); Koi Sunrise (Kai lemongrass, ginger Soju, aperol, peach puree, orange juice ); Cucumber Elixer (muddled cucumber, Absolut Elixir, St. Germain, lemon juice, simple syrup); Asian mojito (muddled lime, mint leaves, light rum, house cold sake, mint syrup, ginger syrup, soda); Dragon Mai Tai (Bacardi Dragonberry, Bacardi O, triple sec, pineapple juice, orange juice, grenadine, Myers rum) and Dragonfly (vodka, pineapple juice, ginger syrup, lime juice, grenadine float). The cot is $25, includes small plates such as sushi, spring rolls and crab rangoon

Geja's donates funds to California wine country wildfire relief

Geja's Cafe, 340 W. Armitage will donate $10 per bottle of wine sold (from a compiled list designed especially for the effort) to relief funds benefiting California wine regions that were affected by the recent wildfires. The list will be available November 1 through the end of the year. 

Donations can also be made at CA Wine Strong fire relief effort fund.

Shedd Aquarium's Penguin Hops release party

The Shedd Aquarium and Revolution Brewing partner for the sixth Annual Penguin Hops release party 5-10 p.m. November 2, at the Shedd, 1200, S. Lake shore Drive. 

The hops, fresh grown in the Shedd's sustainable gardens is part of the aquarium's conservation efforts. The fundraiser, $1 for each beer sold, benefits the Shedd's conservation initiatives. Tickets to the event give guests access to aquarium attractions and includes live music and noshing food such as lobster mac and cheese; loaded tater tots; pulled pork and cookies. Reps from Rev will be on site to talk about the Penguin Hops brewing project. gusts will also be feted to a trivia session testing their knowledge on penguins, beer and horticulture. the winning team receives a free round of Penguin Hops.

For those who cannot make the event, Penguin Hops will be served at Revolution Brewing's brewpub, 2323 N. Milwaukee and the Revolution Tap Room at 3340 N. Kedzie and other participating bars and restaurants. Tickets.

The Walk-In takes top spot at Yelp's cocktail competition

The Walk-in's "The Get Down (pineapple and lime juice, Plantation Pineapple rum, Drambuie, garnish of fresh mint and topped with Angostura bitters)," created by Phillip Smith, the venue's general manager and beverage direct, took the top spot in Yelp's Cocktail of Chicago Competition held October 11 at Chicago Symphony Hall. The cocktail ($13), is featured on the Walk-In's, 2727 N. Milwaukee, menu as 'The Cocktail of Chicago."

The three spirited concoctions include: Dark and Stormy (Myers’s Dark Rum, ginger beer, bitters and a lime wedge); The Devil’s Margarita (tequila blanco, lime juice, simple syrup, and red wine) and Apple Cider Moscow Mule (vodka, apple cider, lime juice, ginger beer, sprinkle cinnamon, garnish with apple slice). The cocktails are $10 each.

Surly tap takeover at Mac's Wood Grill

Mac’s Wood Grilled, 1801 W. Division, hosts a tap takeover by Minnesota’s Surly Brewing Company beginning 4 p.m. October 26. Brews include three limited release/seasonal varieties: 2016 Darkness Russian Imperial Stout; 2017 Pentagram Brett Dark Ale (both with extremely limited availability in Chicagoland) and wet-hopped Wet, a West Coast-style IPA that was released in September. Year-round bestsellers, Xtra-Citra Pale Ale and Hell German-style Munich Helles Lager, complete the list. 

The beers ($4.50-$9) will be tapped at 4 p.m. and the Surly crew will be in-house for beer education and giveaways from 6-9 p.m. There is no cover charge. Food specials for the event include $3 Devil’s Darkness tacos (spicy ground beef, jalapenos, pico de gallo and lettuce), available 4-11 p.m.  Mac’s Wood Grilled will be open from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. October 26.
