The Sixth's "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" pop-up bar is now open


The Sixth, 2202 W. Lawrence Ave., transforms into “Honey, I Shrunk The Pop-Up”: a Honey, I Shrunk The Kids inspired pop-up bar opened August 26.

The pop-up bar will offer 14 cocktails cocktails inspired the movies, which starred Rick Moranis as a scientist who shrunk his kids as well as neighbors in the original 1989 movie,"Honey, I shrunk the Kids" along with the two sequels that followed. The themed bar, which will feature a movie themed decor interior and outside, will be around until November 1.

Drinks include: Shrink Ray (hibiscus house-infused vodka; Creme de Violette; $13); Dad, Don't Eat Me (Plantation 3 Stars rum; Honey Nut Cheerios house-infused cereal milk and house toasted oat syrup; $13); Something with Potassium (Lucy Pistolas mezcal; Creme de Banane, coconut water, orange blossom; $15) and Honey I Need a Drink (gin; Rhine Hall Apple Brandy; Liquor 43 and Krupnik honey bitters; $15) and Root beer float (Sarsaparilla house-infused bourbon; sassafras house-infused Lucano, Averna; $14) and Szalinski Sazerac (rye, Big Bottom Starka, house-infused Anyżówka, Peychaud’s Bitters, Angostura Bitters; $15).

Food inspired dishes such as “We’ve Been Saved By … Onion Dip! (French onion dip with housemade potato chips; $9) and “I Could Eat A Corndog The Size Of A Truck! (three corndogs served with fries in a truck with sweet chili aioli & ketchup; $9).

Women's Restaurant Week kicks off today


Women's Restaurant Week kicks off today, which happens to be Women's Equality Day, and area restaurants helmed by woman are stepping up to the plate.

Trailblazing women chefs such as Sarah Stegner (Prairie Grass Cafe) and Carrie Nahabedian (Brindille) are joining James Beard Foundation trustee and Let's Talk founder Rohini Dey (Vermilion) in encourage the support for women-driven restaurants. The event runs through August 31. Look for specials at participating restaurants. Participants subject to change. More details here.

Chocolate Sanctuary's August Chef's dinner


Chocolate Sanctuary, 5101 Washington, Gurnee, Chef's dinner "Sangria and a taste of Spain," takes place 6-8 p.m. August 26-27; $45.

The four-course menu begins with olive oil poached baby octopus, Spanish chorizo, creamy navy beans with mixed green salad paired with sangria. The following courses are: saffron risotto topped with fried leeks, paired with citrus honey sangria; grilled pork tenderloin; lemon pepper potatoes; mojo sauce paired with grilled jalapeno lime sangria and a dessert course featuring chocolate flan served with Richard coffee and cinnamon churros.

McCormick & Schmick's, participating locations, is offering a special three-course meal Sundays & Mondays only; $25, tax and gratuity not included.  

The current menu is house of Caesar salad; crab cake stuffed Alaska sole; and choice of chocolate silk pie or the chef's seasonal cheesecake.

Azul located in Goose Island opened today


Azul Mariscos, located along the Chicago River at 1177 N. Elston in Goose Island teeitory, officially opened today.

The Latin-inspired seafood restaurant, manned by Chef Michael Hernandez, offers a variety of grilled, baked, fried and raw seafood options that include: grilled King Crab legs; whole Veracruz red snapper and grilled tequila-lime glazed salmon topped with housemade fire-roasted salsa and fresh avocado.

Craft cocktails, wine and international spirits highlight the beverage menu. Individual cans of select wine are available as well.

Mercadito's new summer cocktails available for a limited time


Mercadtio, 108 W. Kinzie, helps ward off the dog days of summer with a round of refreshing summer cocktails, available through August 27.

The new summer selections are: Irish Paloma, sangria and the peach: Irish Paloma (Bushmills Irish whiskey, grapefruit and rosemary) pictured; sangria (Cazadores Blanco, cabernet, cassis and citrus) and The Peach (Parida Blanco, grilled peaches; honey and ancho reyes); $15 each.

In addition the restaurant is featuring Amiga Sandia, a watermelon-based cocktail (Casamigos Blanco, fresh watermelon, lime and basil; $14.50) throughout the summer.

The scallop kit fresh scallop, eggplant, capers, ground cherries, carmen peppers, gold cipollini onions, cherry tomatoes; $45. A bottle Champalou, Chenin Blanc, Loire Valley, France; $22.50.
