Forbidden Root partners with artist for special beer series


Forbidden Root Brewery, 1746 W. Chicago, hosts a release party for Radio Swan, the first beer in a collaborative series with artist Tony Fitzpatrick, 6 p.m. July 18. 

Fitzpatrick's, who worked with the Forbidden Root team on the idea of pairing his artwork with head brewer BJ Pichman’s New England-style IPAs, Radio Swan, inspired by the artist's collage by the same name, was created.

Radio Swan, 6.4% NEIPA brewed with rye malt, Mosaic and El Dorado hops, and a touch of lactose. The brew has dank aromatics with a touch of bright fruit. A creamy mouth feel starts out sweet and juicy, and then rounds out to finish dry with an echo of rye complexity, will be released in 4-packs of 16-oz cans.

Bud and Burgers military benefit event


Chicago Tribune's Redeye's Budweiser  and Burgers pop-up event take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 18-21 at 6 S. Clark. 

Participating chefs are: Todd Stein (executive chef: Formento's, Nonna's and The Bristol); Mike Sheerin (executive chef: Rockit bar & Grill); Danny Grant (executive chef: Maple & Ash) and Robert Levitt (The Butcher and Larder). 

Reservations are $5, includes gourmet burger created by one of the four chefs and a Bud. All proceeds benefit Folds of Honor, providing educational support for spouses and children of fallen and wounded soldiers. Make reservations here

Staytion Market and Bar mixology classes


Staytion Market & Bar, 1 West Wacker Drive, kicks off a new Summer Thursday mixology class series beginning July 6 with a tequila session. 

Classes, conducted by a Staytion mixologist, will be made with ingredients easily duplicated at home. The  cost is $14 (the normal costs of a cocktail). Hours are 5-7 p.m. Upcoming classes are: sangria (July 13); boozy slushies (July 20) and rum (July 27).

Dollop Diner opens July 2


All-day breakfast eatery Dollop Diner, 5060 N. Clark, officially opens 8 a.m. July 2 in the historic Andersonville. 

Keith Kreuser, formerly the beverage director at Boltwood, will be in charge of the kitchen. Menu items include: chicken & waffles and Asian pork Sloppy Joe, housemade donuts and handcrafted JMetropolis coffee beverages.

Alcohol services will begin July 6 or 7. bar items will include draft cocktails, wine and local craft beer on tap.

SafeHouse's 007 cocktail


SafeHouse Chicago, 60 E. Ontario, salutes the seventh month of the year with the spy-centric "007 Cocktail,” a nod to fiction's most famous secret agent— James Bond.

The cocktail, Solitaire Sangria (Bacardi Limon, Chardonnay, lemonade, club soda, muddled raspberries with orange garnish, is named for Bond girl Solitaire played by Jane Seymour in "Live and Let Die." 

The drink, priced $7, with $2 from each purchased benefitting the Chicago arm of United Way, will be available through July 31.

Sal's Trattoria now open


Sal's Trattoria, 2834 N. Southport, is now open for business. Chef/partner Allen Sternweller oversees the quaint eatery's kitchen, which churns our authentic Italian cuisine such calamari; burrata, scratch-made pastas. 

Menu items include: beef carpaccio with arugula, capers, red onion tomato and pepper-pecorino, $12 (pictured); rigatoni Bolognese  $16; beef tenderloin, gnocchi with crispy prosciutto, mushrooms and marinara, $15; and fettuccine carbonara.

Keeping on trend with the younger crowd, who prefer smaller servings, the restaurant features half portion-sized dishes for menu items such as spaghetti and meatballs, fettucini Alfredo and gnocchi. The restaurant also offers vegetarian and gluten free options.

210 Restaurant's Gospel brunch returns


The gospel brunch at 210 Restaurant & Live Music Lounge, 210 Green Bay Rd, Highwood, Mother's Day was such a big hit it's returning 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 2 featuring live music by Jeannie Holliday and the Archie Parks Project ($34.95, adults; $19.95 age 11 and under).

Menu items include: deviled eggs; cranberry tuna salad; house smoked lox and mini bagel, and chopped liver. Heartier offerings include: shrimp and chicken gumbo; andouille jambalaya, pit smoked ham, scalloped potatoes; roast turkey with cornbread stuffing and roast Scottish salmon with citrus and capers and asparagus Polonaise.
