Taste of River North returns


Taste of River North takes place July 21-23  at Kingsbury and Erle. New to the event this year is the Best of Taste competition, where event goers select their favorite vendor in several categories.

 Participants in the year's event include: Big & Little's; Da Lobster; El Campeon; El Hefe; Hutch American Cafe; Motel bar; Pinstripes; Pranzi; Rut's Chris Steakhouse; SafeHouse Chicago; Sholado and the Lifeway Kefir Shop. All food and beverage  vendors.

 In addition to the food vendors Hubbard Inn (10 p.m. to closing Friday-Saturday) and Joy District 8 p.m. to closing (July 23). are sponsoring the ToRN beer garden. 

 A live music stage will feature Boy Band Review (8:30 p.m. July 21); Sixteen Candles (8 p.m. July 22) and the Heard (6 p.m. July 23). Complete lineup.

 Other activities include the Lurie family and kids events, Echoes of Chicago art tent and morning workouts in the park hosted by the East Bank Club. 

 Hours are: 5-10 p.m. July 21; noon to 10 p.m. July 22; 11 a.m. to  p.m. July 23. A $5 donation upon entering is suggested.

Mercadito amor de Calor dinner


Mercadito Chicago, 108 W. Kinzie, with special guest Sydney Raguse of the Patron Spirits Company, hosts an amor de Calor Experiential Dinner 6-9 p.m. July 17. Chef Patricio Sandoval creates a four-course dinner partnered with four pours; $75. Cocktails will be prepared with Roca Patron. RSVP required.

Field Museum's ancient brew


The Field Museum has partnered with Off Color Brewing to release a QingMing a limited edition beer, debuts during the museum's Hop to It event 6-8:30 p.m. July 13. The beer will be available on tap and in bottles at the Museum’s Field Bistro. Beginning July 14 will be at select retailers. 

The beer, a combination of traditional Asian brewing techniques with a taste profile of peaches and lemon rind with fragrant aromas of tea, bubblegum, and sake, was inspired by archeological findings from Taixi and a Changzikou tomb, dating back to the Shang/Western Zhou Dynasties circa 1600-722 BCE.

Tickets are $40; $35, for museum members. Open to ages 21 and older.

Maison Marcel opens Bastille Day


Maison Marcel,  3114 N. Broadway, Lakeview's new French bakery and coffee shop opens Bastille Day (July 14).

Paris born and trained baker Arnaud Brochard will feature breads and pastries made from organic ingredients, including Pierre Herme and Le Grenier au Pain.

Beacon Tavern's blue crab boil summer special


Beacon Tavern, 405 N. Wabash, launches the blue crab boil summer dinner series 5 p.m. July 9.

 Guests will be feted to a dinner consisting of a traditional crab boil made with Maryland blue crab, sausage, red-skin potatoes and Beacon's famous cheddar bay biscuits; $85 (pitcher of Revolution Gagelicious beer, house wine or soft drink provided). Roscoe Village Burger Fest closes with Cracker


Roscoe Village Burger Fest, at Belmont and Damen, winds down tomorrow (July 9) with special guest Cracker, who will perform songs from his 25-year career including from his most recent album, "Berkeley to Bakersfield," on the Main Stage at 8:15 p.m. 

 The Sunday music Main Stage lineup also includes: The Fat Cats (12:15 p.m.); The North 41; The Right Now (4 p.m.) and the Way Down Wanderers (6 p.m.)

 Damen Stage entertainers: Chool of Rock (noon); Hello Weekend (1:15 p.m); One of These Nights (3:15 p.m.); One Night Bank (3:45 p.m.) and Sixteen Candles (7:45 p.m.).

Forbidden Root partners with artist for special beer series


Forbidden Root Brewery, 1746 W. Chicago, hosts a release party for Radio Swan, the first beer in a collaborative series with artist Tony Fitzpatrick, 6 p.m. July 18. 

Fitzpatrick's, who worked with the Forbidden Root team on the idea of pairing his artwork with head brewer BJ Pichman’s New England-style IPAs, Radio Swan, inspired by the artist's collage by the same name, was created.

Radio Swan, 6.4% NEIPA brewed with rye malt, Mosaic and El Dorado hops, and a touch of lactose. The brew has dank aromatics with a touch of bright fruit. A creamy mouth feel starts out sweet and juicy, and then rounds out to finish dry with an echo of rye complexity, will be released in 4-packs of 16-oz cans.

Bud and Burgers military benefit event


Chicago Tribune's Redeye's Budweiser  and Burgers pop-up event take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 18-21 at 6 S. Clark. 

 Participating chefs are: Todd Stein (executive chef: Formento's, Nonna's and The Bristol); Mike Sheerin (executive chef: Rockit bar & Grill); Danny Grant (executive chef: Maple & Ash) and Robert Levitt (The Butcher and Larder). 

 Reservations are $5, includes gourmet burger created by one of the four chefs and a Bud. All proceeds benefit Folds of Honor, providing educational support for spouses and children of fallen and wounded soldiers. Make reservations here.

Staytion Market and Bar mixology classes


Staytion Market & Bar, 1 West Wacker Drive, kicks off a new Summer Thursday mixology class series beginning July 6 with a tequila session. 

 Classes, conducted by a Staytion mixologist, will be made with ingredients easily duplicated at home. The  cost is $14 (the normal costs of a cocktail). Hours are 5-7 p.m. Upcoming classes are: sangria (July 13); boozy slushies (July 20) and rum (July 27).

III Forks "Sommelier for a Day" event


III Forks, 180 N. Field, hosts a wine tasting 5 p.m. July 5; $20. During the event Sommelier Anton Licko leads guests through six samples of French wine paired with hors d' oeuvres.

 Wine selections to be featured are: Emile Beyer, Riesling, Alsace 2014; Joseph Drouhin, Chardonnay, Burgundy 2015; Delaunay, Sauvignon Blanc, Loire Valley 2016; Domaine Dozon, Cabernet Franc, Loire Valley 2015; Marcel Lapierre, Gamay, Beaujolais 2014 and Chateau Lescalle, Red Blend, Bordeaux 2014.

Dollop Diner opens July 2


All-day breakfast eatery Dollop Diner, 5060 N. Clark, officially opens 8 a.m. July 2 in the historic Andersonville. 

Keith Kreuser, formerly the beverage director at Boltwood, will be in charge of the kitchen. Menu items include: chicken & waffles and Asian pork Sloppy Joe, housemade donuts and handcrafted JMetropolis coffee beverages.

Alcohol services will begin July 6 or 7. bar items will include draft cocktails, wine and local craft beer on tap.

SafeHouse's 007 cocktail


SafeHouse Chicago, 60 E. Ontario, salutes the seventh month of the year with the spy-centric "007 Cocktail,” a nod to fiction's most famous secret agent— James Bond.

The cocktail, Solitaire Sangria (Bacardi Limon, Chardonnay, lemonade, club soda, muddled raspberries with orange garnish, is named for Bond girl Solitaire played by Jane Seymour in "Live and Let Die." 

 The drink, priced $7, with $2 from each purchased benefitting the Chicago arm of United Way, will be available through July 31.
