Uvae's Wednesday and Saturday October wine tastings

Uvae Kitchen and Wine Bar's, 5553 N. Clark St., next wine tasting is 5 p.m. October 14. Burgundy is the selections. Guests can attend both in person on the heated patio or virtually. Guests bringing their own blanket will receive a complimentary glass of Prosecco. Guests can keep track wines sampled with a tasting sheet.

Tastings, 5 p.m. Wednesday and 3 p.m. Saturdays through October 28, are led by Uvae sommeliers and guest winemakers using Power Point presentations. 

Guests receive four 4-oz pours; $30. Small bite add-ons are available for an additional cost: cheese plate ($15); cheese and charcuterie ($20) and duck pate ($12). Register here.

West Town Bakery offering Trump; Pence smash cakes

West Town Bakery, 1916 W. Chicago Ave., is featuring "Go Vote" smash cakes to encourage people to get out and vote, Proceeds benefits The ACLU of Illinois: 2020 Election: Let People Vote initiative along with supporting the two and a half hour closing for all of the Fifty/50 Restaurant Group's closing to allow employees to vote.

The Donald Trump and Mike Pence cake are 4-inches in diameter; made with vanilla cake and vanilla filling; and have “Smash Me” written on the side. The Trump cake – decorated with orange sprinkles – features different unflattering Trump facial expressions. The Pence cake – decorated with yellow sprinkles – features a meme of Pence with a raging case of pink eye and a fly perched atop his lily-white hair.

The cakes, $15 each, are available in-store or can be pre-ordered. In addition guests can customize their own version of the smash cakes (flavor, filling or frosting) via email: cakes@westtownbakery.com. Azul Mariscos' weekend brunch begins Oct. 10

Azul Mariscos, 1177 N. Elston Ave., Michael Hernandez (pictured), executive chef of the Latin-inspired restaurant & bar, launches weekend brunch beginning 11:30 a.m. October 10.


Brunch items include:  lobster avocado toast (lobster claw and tail meat; sunny side-up quail egg, guacamole, pico de gallo, Cojita cheese, and housemade tostones); Ancho Mexican chocolate stuffed pancakes with fresh strawberries, powdered sugar and maple syrup; churro French toast (thick-cut challah bread, cinnamon toast crumble, cinnamon ice cream; vanilla and caramel drizzle and maple syrup); brunch tacos (scrambled eggs, Chihuahua cheese, housemade fire-roasted salsa; choice of corn or flour tortilla and choice of refried beans and avocado; poblano pepper, avocado and red onion, breakfast sausage, bacon, steak or soy chorizo).


In addition the chef's signature dish chilaquiles (flash fried and seasoned corn tortilla, cooked in salsa; two eggs; Chihuahua cheese; sour cream and choice of salsa rojas, salsa Verde or diablo sauce). For an additional charge chorizo, chicken, steak, shrimp or lobster can be added. 


Brunch burgers and grilled honey chipotle glazed wings along will also be available.  Brunch hours are 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

Flavors of Albany Park restaurant crawl goes virtual

Flavors of Albany Park restaurant crawl returns October 8 showcasing the rich, international cultures and cuisines of Chicago's Northwest Side.

More than 30 diverse ethnic restaurants and businesses open their doors for the occasion. Visitors are invited to dine in or outside. Delivery and takeout is also available.

Guests can submit copies of their receipts to events@northrivercommission.org to enter drawings to win local prizes. Winners will be selected weekly and notified by email. 

Visitors are also encouraged to write reviews and share pictures on social media with the hashtags #GlobalRootsLocalHeart and #FlavorsofAP.

Virtual fundraising event for Haymarket Center October 10

Remove the Stigma,” an event benefitting Haymarket Center takes 7 p.m. October 10. 

Chef Nickson, founder of Wishbone Restaurant, will prepare a dish to kick off the event, followed by a live music performance from Chicago artist David Davis. 


All proceeds from the event benefits Haymarket, the largest not-for-profit community-based adult substance use treatment facility in Chicago, allowing them to continue to provide lifesaving care to those in need. Currently, the center has 30 specialized programs and serves over 12,000 people annually, regardless of their ability to pay. Tickets are $100 per person, and $30 for young professionals under 30. Hooter's "Give a Hoot" Breast Cancer Awareness initiative


Hooter's, participating locations, pitches in the fight against breast caner with a month-long fundraising effort in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

During the "Give a Hoot" initiative guests support the cause by adding their name to an endowment card in the restaurant; purchase a pink drink created for the occasion or, "pink up," their check by adding a cash or credit card donation to the bill or by purchasing specially offered pink merchandise. Donations can also be made online.  You can also donate via the restaurant's Facebook page.
